چکیده

[1] Using infrared satellite imagery, best-track data, and reanalysis data, tropical cyclones are shown to contain a disproportionate amount of the deepest convection in the tropics. Although tropical cyclones account for only 7% of the deep convection in the tropics, they account for about 15% of the deep convection with cloud-top temperatures below the monthly averaged tropopause temperature and 29% of the clouds that attain a cloud-top temperature 15 K below the temperature of the tropopause. This suggests that tropical cyclones could play an important role in setting the humidity of the stratosphere. Citation: Romps, D. M., and Z. Evolution of Convection During Tropical Cyclogenesis

Central to tropical cyclogenesis is the changing behavior of moist convection as the cyclone evolves. Based on a cumulus ensemble model run in weak temperature gradient mode, we suggest that the mid-level vortex created by early-stage convection stabilizes the environment in way that favors further development. In particular, modeled convection occurring in the more stable environment produces ...

A Case Study of an Outbreak of Twin Tropical Cyclones

Previous studies have found that twin tropical cyclogenesis typically occurs 2–3 times a year in the Pacific Ocean. During October 1997, however, three sets of twin tropical cyclones developed in the central Pacific within a single month. Tropical cyclone archives indicate that this is the only such outbreak from 1969 to 2006. This case study explores the background and synoptic conditions that...

Isotopes, seasonal signals, and transport near the tropical tropopause

A recent model study (Sherwood and Dessler 2001) found that dehydration of air within energetic overshooting convective cells, followed by slow lofting into the stratosphere, could account for moisture levels in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere given realistic horizontal transports and diabatic circulations. Here, we present augmented model simulations of transport across the tropic...

The Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation in Tropical Cyclones

Position and intensity data from the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) are combined with global, gridded precipitation estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)Multisatellite PrecipitationAnalysis (TMPA) for the period 1998–2013 to study the diurnal cycle of precipitation in tropical cyclones. The comprehensive global coverage and large sampl...

Characterizing tropical overshooting deep convection from joint analysis of CloudSat and geostationary satellite observations

[1] Tropical overshooting deep convection (ODC) plays an important role in affecting the heat and constituent budgets of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. This study investigates the properties and behaviors of such intense deep convection using a combination of CloudSat observations and geostationary satellite data. Our study approaches the subject from two unique perspectives: fir...
